Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright & John Boyega representing black love on screen

Three of our favourite British Black stars will be representing black love on the big screen.

Identity Drama school alumni John Boyega and Letitia Wright will star in Mike Cahill’s romantic sci-fi ‘Hold Back the Stars‘. Adapted from author Katie Khan’s 2017 novel of the same name, Hold Back the Stars tells the story of a man (Boyega) and woman (Wright) trapped in space with only an hour and a half of oxygen reminiscing about their love affair on Earth.  The film will be directed by Mike Cahill (I Origins) and adapted for screen by Christy Hall.

Oscar-nominated Daniel Kaluuya will star opposite African American actress Jodie Turner-Smith (Nightflyers) in ‘Queen & Slim‘. Written by Emmy award-winning writer/actress Lena Waithe (Master of None) and directed Melina Matsoukas (Insecure) whose making her feature directorial debut, Queen & Slim is about how a couple’s lives unfold after they’re stopped by the police.

The significance is that British Black talent continues to take Hollywood by storm. The elephant in the room is that Hollywood is setting the trend with showing variations of black love the big screen. Long overdue. We are here for it. UK what’s the plan post ‘Been So Long‘?

Whilst these projects are underway, Boyega will next be seen in the next installment of ‘Star Wars: Episode IX‘, reprising his role as Finn. Wright will be back as our Shuri, reprising her Black Panther character in the upcoming Avengers film. Kaluuya can currently be seen in British Black director and Oscar winner, Steve McQueen’s latest offering ‘Widows‘ which also stars Oscar winner Viola Davis, Atlanta star Brian Tyree-Henry and Grammy, Tony, Emmy award-winning fellow Brit, Cynthia Erivo.
